An Artist by any other name...
Finding Myself at The McMicheal
Today at The McMichael, surrounded by the awe-inspiring works of art, I found myself engaged in conversations with passionate volunteers throughout the afternoon. One particular exchange resonated deeply—a dialogue with a volunteer who, much like myself, delved into the artist's creative process exhibited before us.
In asking a seemingly simple question, "Do you paint?" I sensed a familiar hesitation in her response, a reluctance to claim the title of "artist." As our conversation unfolded, she shared fragments of her artistic journey—oil classes in college, sporadic projects as a mom—but the recurring theme was an underlying reluctance to declare herself an artist because, in her words, it hadn't "resulted in anything."
This encounter stirred a reflection on the concept of being an artist. How often do we dismiss our creative endeavours because they haven't resulted in a sale or public recognition? The celebrated artists we admire didn't create for anyone but themselves; they painted because it felt right, it fed their souls. Why deny ourselves that same freedom?
So, here's a gentle reminder: You don't need external validation to be an artist. It's not about selling or showcasing; it's about the intrinsic joy of creation. Whether it's experimenting with your kids' watercolours, playing with playdough, or scribbling with crayons—allow yourself the freedom to get your hands dirty. Create without the pressure of perfection or a finished product.
Art is not always about the masterpiece on display; sometimes, it's about the messy, unpolished process of creating. It's about you being you, doing something that feeds your soul. So, pick up those colours, let them interact, even if they end up like mud. It's not about the art; it's about you—nourishing your spirit and relishing the sheer act of being alive in the creative moment. Embrace the art of being you and watch those brilliant colours spill over, infusing joy into every corner of your life.
